TRYHARD aims to examine notions of identity, persona, and the self within the community through a dialogue of vibrant, unconventional, collaborative, and interactive works.
The 9 emerging artists each explore, through an array of media from filmmaking to fiber, the shifting nature of persona—the code switching and contortion intrinsic to constructing an identity and inhabiting a body.
Self-concept is patchworked out of countless bits and pieces: by the communities, hobbies, and experience we identify ourselves with, and by the stereotypes we push against, embrace, or feel forced to submit to. It is a futile effort when we desperately hide ourselves to avoid being misunderstood; but when shielded by a costume we gain an unexpected sense of euphoric freedom that suddenly transforms the space around and within us.
TRYHARD serves as a mirror to the artifice of selfhood, embracing its fuzzy boundaries and embarrassing theatricality.
Where do the costumes and masks we wear end, and the “true self” begin?
Can a perfect, vacuum-sealed “true self” even be isolated at all?
Imagining space as a viscous thing, how does our presence leave an impression on what surrounds us?
