Bright Black, Silver

Joe Bussell

2022 | acrylic on canvas

I am a queer artist based in Kansas City. My abstract paintings, sculpture, and ceramics aim to create sumptuous and lush pieces that capture the beauty and struggle of being part of the LGBTQAI+ community. My art often blurs the lines between 2D and 3D, as I love experimenting with different mediums. I hope to evoke a sense of hunger and longing in the viewer, as we all crave acceptance and understanding.

I have maintained my professional contemporary art practice for over 40 years. In that time, I received my BFA in painting at Kansas University, my MFA’s in painting and ceramics at Washington University in Saint Louis. I continue to exhibit widely in the US and Europe. The development of my visual language took on new heights while living in London, Boston, Los Angeles, Tucson and various cities in the Midwest. Most vividly, I worked in an AIDS hospice for five years. The experiences at the hospice are forever seared into my always expanding queer abstract language.
